A few years ago I started out by 'doing the books' for my husband's plumbing and heating business and in order to feel confident in processing his accounts, I started an evening class with the local college, which led on to gaining an AAT Accountancy qualification.

Currently, I'm studying to become a fully qualified chartered accountant, although that is a few years away yet as I am fitting my studies around family and running a full-time business.

Deciding to set up my own bookkeeping business was a natural progression, in part because of the work done with my husbands small business and also because I was being asked by friends who have small business' if I would help to sort out their books.

I decided to launch myself as a sole trader providing a bookkeeping service in 2015 and my business has been steadily growing ever since, mostly through word of mouth and clients recommending me, which I take as a good sign of a happy client.

Clients vary from small sole traders who just want their bags of receipts sorting into a proper accounting record once a year, through to large companies with a significant turnover who need weekly bookkeeping to support their business and to keep on top of their financial position.

Being a very methodical and organised person, I gain a great deal of satisfaction in creating an organised file from a bag of receipts. Odd, I know. I previously worked at the HMRC tax office for a number of years, but took redundancy when the Taunton office relocated to Exeter. I decided to retrain in accountancy and have now completed my studies for level 2 Accounting with the AAT.

Over the last year I have worked with Susan on a variety of client accounts, which has helped underscore my studies and also enabled me to learn new skills and meet a diverse range of clients.

I love that I can bring my experience of working at HMRC into my current role and help clients meet their compliance and grow their business, by supporting their accounting and bookkeeping needs.
